Plotting the Route

The Destination
The goal is to end up in Yosemite National Park on September 28 where we plan to camp for a week, joined by family and good friends. It is a reunion of sorts and a Celebration of Life for my brother, who passed away 2 1/2 years ago. Yosemite was his favorite spot and we plan to have a brief memorial for him and scatter his ashes.

Getting there
Using the Good Sam Trip Planner, we spent several weeks ogling websites, brochures, maps and talking with others trying to decide where to stop along the coast and what sites are most important. You can't see it all, even taking two weeks to drive it. What are our priorities?

  • Easy travel days
  • Lots of time to wander and stop to see things
  • Stay close to the ocean - mostly Hwy. 101
  • Hookups where we camp
The Trip Planner identifies campgrounds and RV parks, helps calculate travel time between stops, fuel consumption and cost, and also lists many sites along the way. This is a very neat tool we recommend!

The only real limitation to this tool is a restriction to 25 stops per trip. So we broke our trip into two pieces to accommodate that.

Diners, Fruit Stands, and Beaches
High on our list of things to see are the gorgeous beaches of Oregon and Northern California. Just sitting on a rock watching the waves is so relaxing. We both love bird watching, sea life and just walking along the water soaking up "Vitamin D". Can you guess how many Oregon State Parks there are along the coast? I counted at least 70 and that doesn't include the country parks, scenic overlooks and historical markers. We would need a month of Sundays to see them all!

Johnnie loves the old fashioned family diners serving comfort foods like Biscuits and Gravy, Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches, Chicken Fried Steak and all manner of yummy home cooking. We will be watching where the local cars are parked and that is where we stop!

This time of year roadside fruit and vegetable stands will still be in full swing so we are carrying very little fresh food with us and plan to stop along the way. Here is a handy link we found to the Oregon farm stands:

Lighthouses, Ghost Towns, and Historical Monuments
Oregon coast boasts 11 light houses and we hope to see a few of them. Bodie, CA is definitely on our list of Ghost Towns to see. Oregon has many old mining, logging and railroad towns as well. I am particularly interested in stopping here; with a name like that you have to wonder what is the backstory!
I am sure there are enough historical spots along the coast to please any history buff. We will play those by ear.

Ok now for the last minute packing .....
